Pediocactus simpsonii ssp.bensonii is based on the latin diagnosis of Engelmann in Transactions of the Academy of Science of St.Louis, 2:197, 1863, and the following type: Lectotype (Benson, Cact. & Succt. J. (US) 33:51-52, 1961) " Mount Vernon, presumably by Parry, Hall & Harbour, 1862, Missouri Botanical Garden, St.Louis".
